Students can be identified either on the basis of their CGPA obtained in the examinations, and 12th std. marks for the first year students, or by conducting a separate called as Test for Assessing Students’ Calibre (TASC) for assessing the quality of students at our University each year. The test may have following components on which students may be evaluated and the quality spread of the students may be determined. The duration of the test may be kept for One Hour. The components may include:
The TASC will help us in identifying those students who have the ability to enhance their calibre further when they are supported and mentored by the teachers and the University. School-wise those 5% students can be selected on the basis of their marks obtained in the test. (This may also help us in the Rationalization process as the scores obtained by the students can be used to determine Mean and Standard Deviation of the University as a whole as well as for each school. Such Mean and Standard Deviation can be used in the rationalization process).
The students identified may be called as PMG (President’s Meritorious Group). They may be issued a separate Letter of Appreciation indicating that a student is falling in this group in a particular year.
The right teachers may be identified as career guides or counselors to mentor the students. Teachers’ academic merit, their hobbies and interests, achievements, etc. may be considered to select as Mentors. Their selection as Mentor to be considered as part of API. Their prime role will be to ensure that students participate in the special activities and initiatives undertaken by the University for them, and to encourage students to enhance their overall performance in the University.
After identification and selection, exclusive workshop may be organized for teachers to prepare them for providing effective mentorship to the students. A brief curriculum can be developed as a training module for mentorship.
The students may be allocated according to school so that a particular school student gets the Mentor from the particular school. No mentor should have more than five students under mentorship in order to have quality in the mentorship process.
Students selected for mentoring will be required to fill up the Self-Assessment form (Annexure-1) in order to understand their personality, their goals and aspirations, and their expectations from the University. This will be done each year at the beginning of the Academic Year.
These are the activities which will add huge value to the students’ overall capabilities.
Meritorious students may be appointed as Academic Associates to leverage their strength for enhancing academic calibre of other students through peer-learning.
