Professor Souvik Bhattacharyya Back
Professor Bhattacharyya graduated from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, with a Bachelor’s degree in 1981; which was followed by a Master’s degree in 1985 from the University of Cincinnati, USA. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Texas A&M University, USA, in 1991, with a specialization in Thermal Sciences. After a post-doctoral research stint at Texas A&M, he joined the faculty of IIT Kharagpur, India, in 1991. He is currently the Deputy Director of IIT Kharagpur and a member of the CSIR-CGCRI Research Council for the period 2013–2016.
In addition, Professor Bhattacharyya has also taught at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, and the Rhein-Waal University, Germany, over the years.
Having co-authored the textbook Heat Transfer with JP Holman and published extensively in fields such as heat transfer enhancement, thermodynamic optimization, energy engineering, natural refrigerant based trans-critical heating/cooling systems, and natural circulation loops, Dr Bhattacharyya now serves as associate editor of the International Journal of Alternative Energy. He also serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Power and Energy Systems, and the Journal of Nano Energy and Power Research, and was on the editorial board of Energy Conversion and Managementfrom 2007 to 2013.
He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the West Bengal Academy of Science Technology.
A well-respected teacher, he was the first recipient of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) Outstanding Teacher award 2013.
